I get so many messages from people asking me what I do for snacks. They’re absolutely crucial to keeping on top of your diet. If you’re exercising a lot, as you need to be when you’re striving to achieve any fitness related goals, 3 meals a day doesn’t fill you up. The number of snacks that exist also make choosing the right ones difficult. What’s more, the healthy ones are often expensive and higher in sugar than you’d expect, meaning a bag of crisps stands out on the shelf when you’re budgeting. Take dried fruit & nuts for example. Full of healthy fats, yes, but also expensive and quite high in sugar. The best way to get around the whole problem? Make your own snacks using healthy ingredients. This way your snacks will be more filling, more nutritious and best of all, much better value for money.
Apart from anything else, you can create snacks to taste. What’s better than a delicious snack that’s also going to give you the nutrition you need? Especially when it’s affordable. I’ve done protein balls in the past, another great option, but I thought I’d create some no bake bars too! These are high in healthy fats (Nuts being a perfect source), protein of course, and I’ve thrown in some oats to add a dose of carbs.
150g Oats (15p)
1 Scoop Vanilla Whey Isolate (I use Infinite Labs) (60p)
50g Ground Mixed Nuts (60p)
120g Peanut Butter (40p)
100ml Unsweetened Almond Milk (20p)
15ml (1 Tbsp) Honey (5p)
1 Pack Urban Fruit Raspberry (£1)
30g Frozen Raspberries (15p)
- Mix everything together in a bowl except the frozen raspberries.
- Evenly spread the mix into a sheet baking tray.
- Pop in the fridge for 24 hours.
- Take out, smash up and sprinkle the frozen raspberries on top and cut into 10 evenly sized bars.
